Xenosmilus ist eine Säbelzahnkatze aus dem Unterpleistozän von Nordamerika. Fossilien dieser Gattung, die etwa die Größe eines heutigen Löwen erreichte, sind mehr als eine Million Jahre alt. Es sind bisher nur zwei Teilskelette aus Florida bekannt.

Bis zur Beschreibung der Gattung waren nur zwei Arten von Säbelzahnkatzen aus dem Unteren Pleistozän Nordamerikas bekannt. Die kleinere, kompakte Art Smilodon gracilis und die größere, schlankere Art Homotherium serum, die im Gegensatz zu Smilodon auch kürzere, stärker abgeflachte Säbelzähne besaß. Funde einer Katze, die Merkmale der beiden Gattungen Homotherium und Smilodon vereinigt, führten zur Beschreibung der neuen Gattung Xenosmilus. Bisher ist nur die Typusart X. hodsonae bekannt.

Entdecker von Xenosmilus ist der Fossiliensammler John B. Babiarz aus Mesa (Arizona). Der Artepitheton „hodsonae“ bezieht sich auf seine Ehefrau Debra L. Hodson.

Stammesgeschichtlich gehört Xenosmilus genau wie Homotherium in die Gruppe der Homotherini. Es besaß jedoch im Vergleich zu den anderen Gattungen dieser Gruppe stärkere, kürzere Beine, die eher an die von Smilodon erinnern. Typisch waren auch stark gezackte, relativ kurze Säbelzähne und ein robuster Körper.
