List of comics publishing companies
This list of comics publishing companies lists companies, specifically publishing companies who primarily publish comics . Comic art is an art medium used to present ideas or stories via images. The images are usually arranged in panels in a sequence that conveys the story. Sounds are expressed using speech balloons and onomatopoeia . European comics have existed since 1837, when Swiss artist Rodolphe Töpffer published Histoire de Mr. Vieux Bois . The oldest comic publishing company on this list is the now-defunct book publishing company, David McKay Publications that was founded in 1882 and published comics from 1935 to 1950. Most comic publishing companies were established in the United States , where comics became popular in the middle of the twentieth century.

O.W. Comics, Corp., also known as Oxton & Woolfolk Comics, was the Publisher of Mad Hatter No. 1 and No. 2 (1946). The Mad Hatter was an attorney named Grant Richmond, who craved adventure. With his superb, athletic ability and his signal hat, he took on crime bosses. Grant Richmond was a little-respected junior partner at the law firm of Fuddy and Bustle who felt that the legal system made as much sense as the work of Lewis Carroll. So by night, he put on a costume and became the Mad Hatter. He can shine his top hat insignia against walls to strike fear into criminals, and he also speaks in rhyme.
Mad Hatter No. 1 features A Date With the Mad Hatter! (11 pages). Synopsis: Barbara is given an assignment by her editor to get a date with the Mad Hatter and see if she can find out who he really is. Featuring: The Mad Hatter Characters: The Mad Hatter [Grant Richmond] (introduction); Barbara Blake (reporter); Hunky Henders (villain, death); Jim Murray (villain, newspaper editor); Rocky Grimes (villain) and The Case of the Scornful Girl! (2 pages). Synopsis: Grant's friend is interested in a girl whose brother was imprisoned for a crime, and he believes that the girl won't speak to him because of that. So the Mad Hatter decides to talk to the girl at a dance aboard ship, but he discovers something wrong. Readers are asked to match wits with the Hatter to solve the dilemma.
Featuring: The Mad Hatter Characters: The Mad Hatter [Grant Richmond]; Jane; Jane's brother (villain).
Mad Hatter No. 2 features Mad Hatter vs. Humpty Dumpty; Mad Hatter Visits the Golden City of Crime Synopsis: The Hatter finally tracks down wanted criminal Frank Faro, who was soon executed in the electric chair. Soon after, a doctor claims the body, takes it to his lab, and removes the brain, placing it in the skull of a gorilla. When the gorilla comes to, he kills the doctor and disguises himself as a human, calling himself the Gargoyle, and vows revenge on the judge, jury and Mad Hatter. Characters: The Mad Hatter [Grant Richmond]; Barbara Blake (reporter); un-named doctor (death); Fuddy (lawyer); Bustle (lawyer); Judge John Hastings (death); Denimore (juror, death); Harley (juror, death); Terese Dagon (juror); The Gargoyle [aka Frank Faro] (villain), The Golden City! (13 pages) Synopsis: In 1528, Spanish exporer Fernand De Leon had discovered the fabled City of Gold, built by the Atzecs who had fled from Cortez twenty years before. Now, in 1946, young Grant Richmond suspects that noted jewel thief Spade Delvane is escaping town by air with $50,000 in gold, and when the Mad Hatter follows him, they both wind up in the City of Gold. Characters: The Mad Hatter [Grant Richmond]; Fernand De Leon (flashback, explorer, death); Fuddy (lawyer); Bustle (lawyer); De Leon (descendant of Fernand); Spade Delvane (villain, jewel thief), and Crime Consultant! (11 pages) Synopsis: The Hatter spots Humpty Dumpty and his men making a fur heist on the waterfront.....later, the villain decides to "go straight" in business selling advice for a price......to criminals! The Mad Hatter is concerned when his lawyer bosses decide to defend one of the felons. Characters: The Mad Hatter (last appearance); Humpty Dumpty (villain); Freddy Gaunt (villain); Sparrow Saunders (villain).[ 213]
O.W. Comics was a short-lived Publishing House consisting of comic veteran, William_Woolfolk , who had worked for MLJ Magazines, Fawcett Comics and Marvel Comics, and John Gerard "Jack" Oxton, Sr., an Illustrator, Film Editor at Paramount News/Paramount Pictures in New York City, and from 1957-1969, he was also Local Union Head/Business Agent for IATSE Motion Picture Editors Guild, Editors Union Local 771, in New York.
In 1944, Bill Woolfolk and Jack Oxton, Sr., co-founded their own comic book company, O.W. Comics, which stood for Oxton & Woolfolk. Woolfolk, the Editor, and Oxton, the President, operated their publishing company, O.W. Comics, Inc., initially at 150 Nassau Street, then at 270 Broadway in New York City, New York in the mid to late-1940's. In 1945, Bill and Jack co-created the comic books Mad Hatter Vol. I, No. 1 (January-February, 1946), Mad Hatter Vol. I, No. 2 (September-October, 1946), and one of Animal Fables.
Victims of the acute paper rationing of 1945-1949 which bankrupted many U.S. Publishing Companies during World War II, O.W. Comics Corp., had bought a catalogue business in order to get their paper rations during the war. They intended for the comic book series Mad Hatter to be published bi-monthly. However, Mad Hatter only lasted two series (Mad Hatter #1 & #2 were both released in 1946), after the printing company O.W. Comics had contracted with screwed up their order. Instead of printing the 48-page Comic Book that had been planned and contracted for, the printing company produced a flimsy 32-pager, which required the comic pages to be eliminated from the finished stories, and the results were dreadful. Lawsuits were instituted against the printing firm by Oxton & Woolfolk, but the damage had already been done. M.C. Gaines bought out Animal Fables and turned it into a successful book, but O.W. Comics, Corp., sadly folded.[ 214] [ 215] [ 216] [ 217] [ 218] [ 219]
