Capoeta es un género de peces de la familia Cyprinidae y de la orden de los Cypriniformes.[2] La distribución del género incluye aguas dulces de Asia Occidental y Europa Oriental: Afganistán, Irán, Turkmenistán, Irak, Siria, Turquía, Rusia, Azerbaiyán, Armenia y ... . Siendo Luciobarbus el género hermana de Capoeta, se pueden distinguir 3 linajes principales dentro de este género: Mesopotamian, Anatolian-Iranian y Aralo-Caspian.[3][4] Las especies Capoeta antalyensis, Capoeta bergamae y Capoeta pestai se encuentran en peligro de extinción, la última casi extinguida ya.[5]
