Estudios
Creció en Ciudad de México y comenzó allí sus estudios. Después estableció su residencia en los Estados Unidos en 1966.[1] Se graduó en la Escuela de Música Juilliard y en la Universidad de Harvard.[2]
Pianista
Max Lifchitz se ha presentado en conciertos y recitales en distintos lugares de los Estados Unidos, Latinoamérica y Europa.[1] Ha tenido especial interés por la música del compositor mexicano Carlos Chávez. Después de la muerte del compositor, se le han encargado las ediciones de algunas de sus piezas.
Director
En 1980, fundó el Ensemble North/South Consonance, dedicado a la interpretación de música clásica contemporánea de las Américas, y funge como su director.[1]
Profesor

Lifchitz ha formado parte de la facultad en la Universidad de Columbia y en la Universidad de Albany, la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York.[1]
Reconocimientos
En 1976, Max Lifchitz recibió el primer premio en el Concurso Internacional Gaudeamus para intérpretes de música del siglo XX celebrado en Holanda.[3]
