Wallace Chafe ˈtʃeɪf (3 de septiembre de 1927 - 3 de febrero de 2019) fue un lingüista estadounidensa, profesor emérito y profesor de investigación en la Universidad de California en Santa Barbara.[1]​

Chafe nació en Cambridge (Massachusetts) y se graduó en la Universidad de Yale, donde obtuvo el doctorado en 1958; de 1975 a 1986 fue director del Survey of California and Other Indian Languages en la Universidad de California en Berkeley.[2]​ Más tarde se trasladó a la Universidad de California en Santa Barbara, donde se convirtió en profesor emérito en la UCSB en 1991.

Chafe es un cognitivista; considera que la semántica es un componente básico del lenguaje. Es crítico con la lingüística generativa de Noam Chomsky.[3]​

Es un erudito influyente en lenguas amerindias, especialmente lenguas iroquesas y lenguas caddoanas, en análisis del discurso y psicolingüística, y también prosodia de la oración.

Junto a Johanna Nichols, editó un volumen seminal sobre evidencialidad en el lenguaje en 1986.
