Altateskin (de l'irlandais Alt an tSeiscinn, signifiant « le vallon du marais ») est un townland de la paroisse civile de Templeport, dans le comté de Cavan, en Irlande.
Il se situe dans la paroisse catholique romaine de Corlough et la baronnie de Tullyhaw[1].
Géographie
Altateskin est bordé à l'ouest par les townlands d'Altcrock, Bellavally Upper, Derrynananta Lower et Altnadarragh, et à l'est par ceux d'Altachullion Upper, Tullyloughfin et Owencam. Ses principaux éléments géographiques sont la rivière Owensallagh (source de la rivière Blackwater, dans le comté de Cavan), le mont Mullaghroe, des cascades, des mares, des gravières, une source thermale sulfureuse et des sources. Altateskin est traversé par des routes secondaires et des chemins ruraux. Le townland couvre une superficie de 533 acres[2].
Histoire
Autrefois, ce townland était probablement inhabité, car il est principalement composé de tourbières et de sols argileux pauvres. Il ne fut pas saisi par les Anglais lors de la Plantation of Ulster en 1610 ni lors de l'établissement cromwellien des années 1660 ; des familles irlandaises dépossédées s'y installèrent donc et commencèrent à défricher et à cultiver la terre.
La première mention de ce townland figure sur une carte datée de 1813 où il est appelé Altaghteskin et Altaghteskan, le propriétaire étant John Ennery, écuyer. Un bail daté du , John Enery de Bawnboy, inclut Altnaskeen, également connu sous le nom d'Alteteskill[3].
Au XIXe siècle, le propriétaire est Lord John Beresford, archevêque protestant d'Armagh. L'histoire foncière complexe de la région avant cette date est décrite dans l'affaire de l'Échiquier de 1838, « Procureur général d'Irlande contre le Lord Primat »[4].
Les registres de répartition de la dîme de 1826 recensent quatre contribuables dans le canton[5].
Les registres topographiques de l'Ordnance Survey de 1836 décrivent ainsi le townland : « un four à lin sur les rives d'un grand cours d'eau. On y trouve également une source thermale en amont. Le hameau est bordé au nord et au sud par deux grands torrents de montagne qui confluent à son extrémité orientale et coulent vers le sud-est ».
Les livres de terrain du bureau d'évaluation d'Altaskin sont disponibles pour [6],[7],[8].
En 1841, la population du twonland est de 54 habitants, dont 29 hommes et 25 femmes. Il y a onze maisons, toutes habitées[9] ; en 1851, la population est de 50 habitants, soit 25 hommes et 25 femmes, cette diminution étant due à la Grande Famine. Le townland compte huit maisons, toutes habitées[9].
La Griffith's Valuation de 1857 recense sept propriétaires fonciers dans le canton[10].
En 1861, la population du townland est de 55 habitants, dont 29 hommes et 26 femmes. Il y a huit maisons et toutes sont habitées[11] ; en 1871, la population est de 46 habitants, dont 25 hommes et 21 femmes. Il y a huit maisons, toutes habitées[12] ; en 1881, la population est de 48 habitants, dont 25 hommes et 23 femmes. Il y a dix maisons, toutes habitées[13] ; en 1891, la population est de 46 habitants, dont 25 hommes et 21 femmes. Il y a neuf maisons, toutes habitées[14].
Dans le recensement irlandais de 1901, onze familles sont recensées dans le townland[15] et dans le recensement irlandais de 1911, ce sont neuf familles qui y sont recensées[16].
