Croagh (en irlandais : Cróch[1]) est un village et une paroisse civile du comté de Limerick, en Irlande.

Lors du recensement de 2016, il comptait 216 habitants[2].

Géographie

Croagh est situé au centre du comté, entre Rathkeale et Adare, à proximité de la route nationale principale N21[3], à environ 22 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Limerick. Le village faisait initialement partie de cet itinéraire avant la construction de la déviation de Croagh en 1986[4]. Il se trouve dans la région agricole connue sous le nom de Golden Vale (en).

Histoire

Au fil des siècles, Croagh a porté différents noms, dont Moycro (1239), Croch (1416), Croth (1452), Croghe (1586), Croaghstowne (1669) et Cruach (1840)[5].

Des vestiges d'anciens établissements dans la région comprennent plusieurs sites de ringforts et de fortifications fortifiées (fulacht fiadh (en)) dans les townlands de Croagh, Adamswood et Ballycannon[6],[7]. Les ruines d'une église médiévale et de son enclos se trouvent dans le village[8]. L'église catholique actuelle, dédiée à saint Jean-Baptiste et construite vers 1830[9], est l'un des édifices protégés du village[10].

Équipements

Croagh, qui comptait 216 habitants lors du recensement de 2016[2], possède une école primaire nationale accueillant environ 70 enfants[11]. Parmi les autres commodités, se trouvent une église catholique, une jardinerie, une crèche, un centre médical, une école de musique, des pubs, une maison de retraite, un centre communautaire, un parc et un terrain de sport[3].

Le club local de l'Association athlétique gaélique, Croagh-Kilfinny (en), a remporté le championnat junior de hurling de Limerick 2020 (joué en 2021 en raison des restrictions liées à la Covid), ainsi que le championnat intermédiaire de hurling de Limerick en 2024[12],[13].
