Quentin Persifor Smith (, Rhinebeck, New York – , Kalamazoo, Michigan) est un philosophe américain. Il termine sa carrière comme professeur émérite de philosophie à l'Université de l'Ouest du Michigan de Kalamazoo, dans le Michigan. Ses travaux portent sur la philosophie du temps, la philosophie du langage, la philosophie de la physique et la philosophie de la religion.
Il est éditeur chez Prometheus Books et rédacteur en chef de la revue Philo de 2001 à 2007. Il a débattu avec William Lane Craig de l'existence de Dieu.
Education et carrière
Quentin Smith est né à Rhinebeck, dans l'État de New York. Son père est professeur de psychologie au Bennington College et il passe la majeure partie de sa jeunesse au Canada.
Il obtient sa licence en philosophie à l'Antioch College, puis un doctorat en philosophie au Boston College.
Après ses études, il obtient un poste de professeur adjoint de philosophie à l'Université du Kentucky. Smith constate qu'il ne pouvait se permettre de perdre le temps consacré à l'enseignement ; il démissionne donc de l'université pour devenir chercheur indépendant.
Après avoir accepté un poste de professeur invité à l'Antioch College, il occupe un poste de professeur de philosophie à la Western Michigan University en 1993 et prend sa retraite en 2015.

Œuvre philosophique
Les travaux de Smith embrassent un large éventail de disciplines. En philosophie de la religion, il est considéré comme un éminent défenseur de l'athéisme[2] et est un pionnier dans la réfutation de l'existence de Dieu à travers diverses théories telles que la cosmologie quantique[3], la relativité générale[4], la théorie du Big Bang[5], les lois naturelles perverses[6] et la cosmologie de Hartle-Hawking. Il participe à de nombreux débats avec des théistes de renom comme William Lane Craig[7],[8] et Alvin Plantinga.
