Rupert Major Downes, né le à Mitcham (Australie-Méridionale) et mort le près de Cairns (Queensland), est un soldat, chirurgien et historien australien.
Fils de Major Downes (en), un officier de l'armée britannique, Rupert Downes s'engage dans l'armée de terre australienne en tant que trompettiste alors qu'il est encore à l'école. Il étudie à l'université de Melbourne, où il obtient ses diplômes de médecine en 1907, puis son doctorat en médecine en 1911.
Biographie
Jeunesse et éducation
Rupert Major Downes naît le à Mitcham, en Australie-Méridionale[1]. Il est le plus jeune des quinze enfants du colonel Major Downes, un officier de l'armée britannique, et de son épouse Helen Maria, née Chamberlin, dont seulement cinq atteignent l'âge adulte[2]. Après avoir servi pendant la guerre de Crimée[3], le colonel Major Downes occupe le poste de commandant des forces coloniales d'Australie-Méridionale et de Victoria avant de prendre sa retraite en 1902 avec le grade de major général de l'armée de terre australienne[4].
