Faustino Santalices Pérez, nado na Granxa (Cadós, Bande) o 16 de novembro de 1877 e finado en Madrid o 6 de decembro de 1960, foi un gaiteiro galego e o investigador máis importante de zanfona na primeira metade do século XX.

Traxectoria

Formación

Estudou Dereito na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, onde coñeceu a Ramón Cabanillas. Despois de licenciarse, ingresou no Ministerio da Gobernación e foi destinado a Soria, onde viviu ata 1914 antes de regresar a Ourense. En 1918 casou con Rosa Muñiz, que o acompañou nas súas actuacións e gravacións. En 1924 foi nomeado Secretario do Goberno Civil de Ourense.

Como gaiteiro, el mesmo afirmaba ter sido alumno de Manuel Castro González, O gaiteiro de Penalta, inmortalizado por Curros Enríquez.[1] Faustino escoitoulle tocar a zanfona a un cego cando neno e ficou prendado dela. Mais durante o último terzo do século XIX este instrumento estaba en vías de desaparición mesmo no ámbito popular e apenas podía verse nalgunha romaxe. Faustino colaborou co folclorista Casto Sampedro Folgar, apuntándolle os seus coñecementos. En 1922 comezou a colaborar como gaiteiro na Coral de Ruada e logo con Os Enxebres. No 1927 gravou dúas pezas coa zanfona.

Guerra e posguerra

Durante os anos da guerra construíu moitas gaitas, que regalou a soldados galegos. Posteriormente foi trasladado a Barcelona e logo a Madrid en 1944, onde colaborou coa agrupación artística Rosalía de Castro e, en 1949, editou en Madrid un disco completo, intitulado Gravaciones históricas de zanfona. Tamén escribiu o primeiro libro español sobre este instrumento, La zanfona (1956), que está baseado no método francés de Michel Corrette (1738) e mesmo inclúe algunhas das súas ilustracións.

Colaborou tamén en periódicos e revistas como Finisterre, Revista de Galicia, Faro de Vigo etc. Foi importante tamén a conferencia que deu en Santiago en 1952 con motivo da inauguración do Pazo de Xelmírez e no recital-homenaxe a Ramón Menéndez Pidal, en 1954, no que deu a coñecer o Romance de don Gaiferos de Mormaltán.

Co apoio da Deputación de Lugo, fundou nesa cidade un Taller-Escola de Instrumentos Galegos en 1951, grazas ao patrocinio do empresario Antonio Fernández López.[2] Nela contou coa axuda do gaiteiro Paulino Pérez e formou artesáns, como o monfortino Amadeo Goyanes, fundamentais para que a tradición da zanfona non se perdese. Ao ano seguinte gravou catro discos, que posteriormente reeditou e refundiu nun único traballo chamado Faustino Santalices.

Dende principios dos anos 90 ten unha rúa dedicada en Pontevedra. O grupo Milladoiro reinterpretou o "Alalá das Mariñas" no disco O niño do Sol, aparecendo na canción a voz e zanfona de Faustino Santalices.
