Pícidos

Os pícidos, coñecidos en galego como petos[1] ou picapaus[2] (Picidae) son unha gran familia de aves da orde das Piciformes que inclúe 218 especies. Teñen unha distribución cosmopolita, coa excepción de Australia, Madagascar e as rexións polares extremas. Poden ser sedentarias ou migratorias; moitas especies fican na mesma área durante anos, mentres que outras viaxan grandes distancias dende as súas zonas de reprodución ás zonas de invernada.

En Galicia habitan 6 especies desta familia.

Descrición

O tamaño das aves desta familia varía entre os 20 e os 59 cm. A plumaxe da maioría das especies é predominantemente verde rechamante, morado e laranxa, aínda que moitos petos presentan certa cantidade de amarelo e rosa. Nos petos moitas especies mostran partes vermellas e beis na cabeza e o abdome. Os membros da familia Picidae teñen fortes peteiros, para tradear e tamborilear nas árbores, e linguas finas, puntiagudas e con pequenas cerdas, para extraer a comida.

Os petos que viven en África posúen pés zigodáctilos, é dicir, con catro dedos, dous apuntando cara a adiante e dous cara a atrás. Esta distribución dos dedos é moi útil para sosterse e gabear polas ramas e troncos das árbores nos que viven.

Comportamento

Alimentación

Normalmente aliméntanse de insectos, vermes e larvas que poden atopar durante todo o ano, capturándoas baixo a codia, no interior das árbores ou en troncos caídos.

Reprodución

Todas as especies da familia Picidae aniñan en buratos. Os petos furan nas árbores os seus propios niños. Os niños furados normalmente só están forrados cos anacos de madeira producidos mentres se construía o burato. Moitas especies de petos furan un niño por tempada. Leva aproximadamente un mes o terminar o traballo. Os niños abandonados adoitan ser empregados por outras moitas aves e animais.

Os membros da familia Picidae son tipicamente monógamos. A parella traballa xunta para construír o niño, chocar os ovos e sacar adiante ao pito. No entanto, na maioría das especies, o macho realiza a maior parte da escavación do niño, e realiza a quenda de noite ao chocar os ovos. Unha niñada consiste tipicamente en 2 a 5 ovos, os cales son brancos e redondeados. Os ovos son incubados durante uns 11 a 14 días antes da eclosión. Daquela o pito tardará uns 18 a 30 días antes de estar listo para abandonar o niño.

En Galicia

En Galicia existen 6 especies pertencentes á orde Picidae. Delas, 5 pódense atoparse durante todo o ano (Picus viridis, Dryocopus martius, Dendrocopos major, Dendrocopos medius e Dendrocopos minor) e 1 é estival (Jynx torquilla)[3].
