Uranio enriquecido

Proporcións de uranio-238 (azul) e uranio-235 (vermello) en estado natural e en estado enriquecido

O uranio enriquecido é un tipo de uranio no que a proporción de uranio-235 na súa composición está incrementada por medio dun proceso de separación de isótopos. O uranio natural está composto dun 99,284% de isótopos de 238U, e o 235U só constitúe un 0,711% da súa masa. 235U é o único nucleido primordial fisible con neutróns térmicos.[1]

O uranio enriquecido é un compoñente esencial para a xeración de enerxía nuclear e para as armas nucleares. A Axencia Internacional da Enerxía Atómica procura supervisar e controlar as subministracións e procesos de enriquecemento de uranio nun esforzo para asegurar xeración de enerxía nuclear e previr a proliferación de armas nucleares.[2]
