Brooke Westcott

Brooke Foss Westcott

Brooke Foss Westcott merupakan ahli Perjanjian Baru Inggris,[1] juga menjadi guru besar di Cambridge.[1] Dia menuliskan tiga komentar terhadap Injil Yohanes.[1] Komentar ini pun amat terkenal waktu itu.[1] Dia bersama dengan Fenton Hort menerbitkan suatu terbitan Perjanjian Baru bahasa Yunani.[1] Terbitan yang dibuat itu dengan memperhatikan semua bukti yang ada.[1] terbitan ini pun menjadi dasar untuk Alkitab English Revish Version tahun 1881.[1] Westcott menjadi uskup Durham dan menunjukkan perhatian mendalam untuk kesejahteraan para buruh tambang.[1][2]

Dia lahir di Birmingham pada 12 januari 1825.[2] Meninggal dunia pada 27 juli 1901.[2] Dia adalah seorang gerejawan dan teolog juga.[2] Dia juga seorang pendeta Durham sejak tahun 1980 sampai dia meninggal dunia.[2]

Ayahnya adalah Frederick Brooke Westcott, seorang ahli botani.[2] Westcott belajar di Edward VI School di Birmingham.[2] Dia diajar oleh James Prince Lee.[2] Dia pun berteman dengan Joseph Barber Lightfoot.[2] Pada tahun 1844 Westcott masuk ke Trinity College, Cambridge.[2] Westcott diundang untuk bergabung ke dalam Cambridge Apostles di Cambridge.[2] Dia lulus sarjana tahun 1846.[2] Setelah itu, dia mengambil gelar sarjana BA pada Januari 1849.[2]
