Jack DeJohnette (lahir 9 Agustus 1942) adalah salah seorang pemain drum dan pianis jazz asal Amerika . Ia termasuk pemain yang sangat disegani dan dikagumi, permainannya yang modern menjadi barometer bagi banyak pemain drum di dunia jazz saat ini.

Jack De Johnette lahir di lingkungan yang mencintai musik, mulai mempelajari instrumen piano sejak usia 4 tahun hingga usia 14 tahun. Begitu menginjak Sekolah Menengah Atas, Jack mulai beralih memainkan drum dan bergabung bersama grup musik di sekolahnya, di waktu yang bersamaan ia mengikuti kursus drum pada Chicago Conservatory of Music. Pada sekitar tahun 60an, dengan latar belakang kehidupan musik di Chicago, Jack memipin grup musiknya sendiri. Ia juga sering bermain piano pada grup musiknya, membawakan musik dengan berbagai genre seperti; R&B, Hard Bop dan Avant Garde. Ia juga terlibat dengan berbagai kegiatan bersama musisi-musisi eksperimentalis yang tergabung dalam AACM, seperti Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchel dan Joseph Jarman. Pada tahun 1966, ia sering menggantikan Rashied Ali, di saat berhalangan pada kwintet John Coltrane. Secara internasional, Jack mulai dikenal setelah bergabung bersama kwartet jazz di bawah pimpinan Charles Lloyd dan pianis Keith Jarrett.^[1]

Sepanjang sejarah hidupnya, Jack pernah berkolaborasi dengan pemain-pemain jazz papan atas Amerika seperti; John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Sun Ra, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Keith Jarrett, Chet Baker, George Benson, Stanley Turentine, Ron Carter, Lee Morgan, Charles Llyod, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter dan Eddie Harris. Menurut pendapat dari beberapa pemain jazz tersebut, mereka senang bermain dengan Jack, karena Jack memiliki naluri dan bermusik yang alami.^[1]

Pada tahun 1968, ia bergabung dengan Miles Davis di waktu yang sangat penting, musik jazz sedang bergejolak menentukan arahnya. Lahirlah album Bitches Brew, dalam biografinya Miles bertutur, bahwa Jack memberikannya rasa dan nyawa yang dalam pada musiknya hingga ia ingin terus memainkannya. Tidak lama setelah itu Keith Jarrett bergabung pada grup musik Miles Davis. Kemudian pada tahun 1971, ia mengajak Jack dan lahirlah album Rutya and Daitya, di bawah label ECM. Ia juga sempat bermain dengan John McLaughlin, Chick Corea dan Dave Holland. Pada tahun yang bersamaan, Jack merilis album dibawah pimpinannya yang berjudul Jack De Johnette Complex dengan label Milestone, dimana ia disitu bermain melodika bersama gurunya Roy Haynes. Pada tahun 1970, ia merilis Have You Heard di Jepang, dan 2 album prestise yang berjudul Sorcery dan Cosmic Chicken. Pada album-album ini Jack bermain dengan Gary Peacock, Bennie Mauphin, Stanley Cowell, Miroslav Vitous, Eddie Gomez, Alex Foster dan Peter Waren.^[1]

Jack DeJohnette mulai merekam album-albumnya, dimana ia menjadi pimpinan dibawah label ECM, seperti album Directions, New Directions dan Special Edition. Jack memberi kontribusi pada evolusi musik jazz. Dalam grup The New Directions, ia menampilkan dua orang teman yang lama bermain dengannya yaitu John Abercrombie dan Lester Bowie. Lester Bowie terus bermain dengannya hingga akhir hayatnya. Ia dan Lester Bowie sempat merilis album duo yang berjudul Zebra. John Abercrombie terus bermain dengannya dalam Gateway Trio bersama bassis Dave Holland. Dalam grup Special Edition, dengan bergantian banyak memperkenalkan solois jazz seperti; David Murray, Rufus Reid, Howard Johnson, Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman, Greg Osby, Michael Caine, Lonnie Plaxio, Garry Thomas dan John Purcell ke pendengar jazz yang lebih besar.^[1]
