2005年9月8日、ソニーはウォークマンAシリーズを発表。同年11月19日より5モデルを発売するとした[3]。本製品群に同梱されることになった、新しいオーディオアプリケーションソフトウェアが「CONNECT Player」である。対応するオペレーティングシステムはWindows XP・2000[4]。インターネット上の音楽配信サイト「Mora」（モーラ）との連携のほか[3]、音楽CDからのMP3やATRACといった形式でのリッピングに対応[4]。将来的にはWMAやAAC形式への対応も予定ないし検討中とされた[3]。このほか特徴的なものとして、楽曲のタイトルやアーティスト名などにふりがなを付与する機能を、ジャストシステムからの技術提供を受けて搭載している[4]。携帯音楽プレーヤーのシェアは2005年11月第2週時点でAppleが59.8%に対し、ソニーは9.7%と落ち込んでおり、ウォークマンAシリーズの投入による巻き返しを狙っていた[5]。

ソニーは1999年に発売した初代メモリースティックウォークマン用のOpenMG Jukeboxから発展したSonicStageを開発し提供してきた。ウォークマンAシリーズの開発にあたり、パーソナルコンピュータ上に構築した楽曲ライブラリと同期するジュークボックス機能や、分析したユーザーの好みに沿った提案を行うアーティストリンク機能を実装するためには新たなアプリケーションソフトウェアが必要とされた。こうして開発されたCONNECT Playerは、Windows ExplorerやMicrosoft Outlookを意識してデザインされ、AppleのiTunesとの類似性も囁かれた。しかし、デビュー当初のCONNECT Playerは動作が重く、楽曲データの転送が終わらないといった不具合が報告され、2006年4月までに4回のアップデートを繰り返した[6]。

2006年5月9日、ソニーはCONNECT Playerの略称である「CP」を冠した「SonicStage CP」（実質的なバージョンは4）を発表し、同月25日から無料配布を開始するとした。CONNECT PlayerをSonicStageへ一本化する方針が示されたのである[7]。同年7月25日、CONNECT PlayerからSonicStage CPへの移行ツールとして、「プレイリストエクスポートツール」の配布を開始。作成したプレイリストの移行のほか、楽曲データ転送の権利回数を損なうことなく移行を行う手順も示された[8]。

2007年6月14日、ソニーはCONNECT Playerのアップデートを同年11月30日をもって終了することを発表[9]。同年11月30日、同社は予告通りアップデートサービスの終了を発表した[10]。
