DistroWatch（ディストロウォッチ）は、各種LinuxディストリビューションやOpenSolarisやBSDといった他の自由ソフトウェア/オープンソースのオペレーティングシステムについて、ニュース、人気ランキング、その他の情報を提供するウェブサイト。今では数百のディストリビューションについての情報を扱っている[1]。Ladislav Bodnar が2001年5月31日に立ち上げ、今も保守している[2]。
概要
このサイトは、ディストリビューション間のパッケージ群の差異や個々のソフトウェアのリビジョンの差異を詳細に比較表の形で提供している。また、各ディストリビューションについて、価格やサポートするプロセッサアーキテクチャなどの基本情報も提供する[3]。他に、各種ディストリビューションに関する出来事を週単位にまとめた DistroWatch Weekly（DWWと略記される）を毎週月曜日に掲載している[4]。2008年11月17日、51/2年間で278号まで掲載した後、BodnarはDWWの編集者の座から退いた。Bodnarは「今後も最新リリースニュースを提供し、サイト内の各ディストリビューションの情報を最新に保つ」と述べている[4]。その後、DWWの編集は Chris Smart が行っている[5]。
DistroWatchは毎月寄付を行っている。これは、DistroWatchと2つのオンラインショップの共同企画で、LinuxやBSDなどのオープンソースソフトウェアについてのCDおよびDVDを低価格で販売し、その収益の一部をオープンソースプロジェクトに寄付するものである。2004年3月にこの企画を開始してから2009年10月までに22,493ドルを各種プロジェクトに寄付してきた[6]。
正確さ
BodnarはDistroWatchの公表している統計情報について、「その中に何がしかの真実があると信じたいが、正直なところ、それほど意味があるものではなく、あまり真剣に受け取るべきではない」[7]と述べているが、それが各種ディストリビューションの人気度のガイドとしてよく参照されている。そのページヒット数カウンタは、「インターネット上のLinuxディストリビューションについての最良のバロメータ」とも呼ばれている[8]。
DistroWatchのこのシステムは不正確だと指摘されており、Ubuntu[9]やFreespire[10]などのディストリビューションはこれを非難したことがある。
