NGC 634は、さんかく座の方角に約2億5,000万 光年離れた位置にある渦巻銀河である。19世紀にフランスの天文学者エドゥアール・ステファンが発見した。白色矮星の爆発的な崩壊（超新星爆発）により、2008年に主要な観測対象となった[4]。この超新星爆発は、2008年1月、日本のアマチュア天文家の市村義美によって発見され SN 2008Aと命名された[5]。発見例の少ないIax型超新星であると推定されている。
