Neo4jはJavaで実装された、 オープンソースの最も人気のあるグラフデータベースである。[4][5][6] Ver1.0は2010年2月に公開された。[7] コミュニティ版のライセンスはGNU General Public Licenseであり、 オンラインバックアップなどの追加モジュールは、GNU Affero General Public Licenseである。また、共に商用ライセンスの利用も可能である。[8] 開発元のNeo4j社はマルメとサンフランシスコ・ベイエリアに拠点を置いている。

2000年、Neo4jの創設者はRDBMSのパフォーマンスの問題に直面し、Neo4jプロトタイプの構築を開始。
2002年、最初のNeo4jを開発。
2003年、24時間365日運用のNeo4jを開発。
2007年、Neo4jでスウェーデンに拠点を置く会社を設立。GPLライセンスで最初のグラフデータベースNeo4jをオープンソース化。
2009年、SunstoneとConorからシード資金の250万ドルを調達し開発を継続。グローバル2000の会社を顧客にする。
2010年、Neo4jバージョン1.0をリリース。
2011年、シリーズAラウンドの資金調達で、本社をシリコンバレーに移転。
2012年、シリーズBラウンドでFidelity、Sunstone、Conorから1,100万ドルの資金調達。グラフデータベースに関する最初のカンファレンス、GraphConnect SF 2012を開催。
