台湾の語源は不明確で、原住民シラヤ族の言語の「Tayouan（ダイオワン、来訪者）」という言葉の音訳とも、また、「海に近い土地」という意味の「Tai-Vaong」や「牛皮の土地」という意味の「Tai-oan」、「人間の場所」という意味の「Tayw-an」とも言われている[1]。大員（台湾語発音：Tāi-uân）（現・台南）が「ダイワン」と呼ばれており、そこにオランダ人が最初に入植したためとも見られている。いずれにしても原住民の言葉が起源とみられ、漢語には由来していない。中国の文献に台湾が台湾（台湾語発音：Tâi-uân）と呼称されるようになったのは清朝が台湾を統治し始めてからのことである。
