KBO 리그의 2001년 시즌은 20번째 시즌이며, 팀당 126경기씩 총 504경기가 열렸다.

2001년에 있었던 팀은 두산 베어스, 삼성 라이온즈, 현대 유니콘스, 한화 이글스, 해태 타이거즈, LG 트윈스, SK 와이번스, 롯데 자이언츠이다.

2001년 프로야구는 2000년 시즌의 심각한 양대리그의 불균형으로 인하여 단일리그로 환원되었다.

4월 5일 개막전을 한 프로야구는 역사상 처음으로 4개 구장 경기 중 3개 구장에서 매진이 되었고, 개막전 네 경기 총 관중수는 6만 7천 240명이었다.[1]

정규리그 3위팀 두산 베어스가 1995년 우승 이후 6년 만의 세 번째 우승이자 1992년 롯데 자이언츠 이후 역대 2번째로 정규리그 3위 팀이 한국시리즈 우승을 하는 업셋 우승을 달성하였고, 삼성 라이온즈는 정규리그를 1위로 마쳤음에도 한국시리즈에서 패배해 또다시 준우승으로 시즌을 마쳐 한국시리즈에서 우승을 못하는 불운을 이어갔다. 김응용 감독은 해태 타이거즈 감독 시절을 포함하여 처음으로 한국시리즈에서 패배를 하였다.

롯데 자이언츠가 7월 24일 김명성 감독이 심장마비로 세상을 떠나는 사상 초유의 사태가 발생하였다. 이후 잔여경기를 우용득 감독 대행 체제로 진행하였으나 시즌을 꼴찌로 마감하였다.

해태 타이거즈가 7월 29일 마지막 경기를 치른 뒤 8월 1일 KIA 타이거즈로 구단명을 바꿨다.

4월 5일 개막전은 롯데-현대, 해태-두산, 한화-삼성, LG-SK 전으로 열렸다.
