Baphia is een geslacht uit de vlinderbloemenfamilie (Leguminosae). Het geslacht telt ongeveer 47 soorten die voorkomen in tropisch Afrika. De meeste soorten komen voor in West-Afrika en Centraal-Afrika, maar er komt ook een soort voor in het oosten van Zuid-Afrika en het westen van Madagaskar.[1] De geslachtsnaam Baphia is afkomstig van het Griekse woord bapto, dat "kleurstof" of "verf" betekent. Dit verwijst naar de rode kleurstof die uit het kernhout van enkele soorten gewonnen wordt.
