Royal Air Force

Royal Air Force (det kongelege britiske luftforsvaret, RAF) er flyvåpenet til Storbritannia. RAF er det eldste sjølvstendige flyvåpenet i verda, det vart skipa 1. april 1918 ved at Royal Flying Corps og Royal Naval Air Service vart slegne saman.

Etter verdskrigen vart RAF mykje redusert i storleik, men bygd opp att og fornya i åra før andre verdskrigen. Her spela RAF ein viktig rolle, ikkje minst i slaget om Storbrittania.

Gjennom den kalde krigen tok RAF del i forsvaret av Europa mot ein invasjon frå Sovjetunionen. I denne tida hadde RAF kapasitet til å bruke atomvåpen.

I dei siste åra har RAF delteke i fleire krigar og fredsbevarande aksjonar ulike stader i verda, til dømes Kosovo, Afghanistan og Irak.
