IPVS (IP Virtual Server) реализует балансировку нагрузки на транспортном уровне, которую часто называют коммутацией 4-го уровня, в составе ядра Linux. Настройка осуществляется с помощью утилиты пользовательского пространства ipvsadm(8) — страница справки man по администрации и привилегированным командам GNU/Linux (англ.).
IPVS является частью проекта Linux Virtual Server (LVS), где она работает на хосте и выполняет роль балансировщика нагрузки перед кластером реальных серверов. IPVS может направлять запросы к службам на базе TCP и UDP на реальные серверы, благодаря чему сервисы этих реальных серверов выглядят как виртуальные службы, доступные по единому IP-адресу. IPVS построена поверх фреймворка Netfilter.[1]
Код IPVS интегрирован в основную ветку ядра Linux, начиная с версий 2.4.x.[1]
