Ellipsis (plural ellipses; frae the Ancient Greek: ἔλλειψις, élleipsis, "omission" or "fawin short") is a series o dots that uisually indicates an intentional omission o a wird, sentence, or whole section frae a text wioot alterin its oreeginal meanin.[1] Dependin on thair context and placement in a sentence, ellipses can an aa indicate an unfinished thocht, a leadin statement, a slicht pause, a mysterious, echoin vyce, or a nervous or awkward silence. Aposiopesis is the use of an ellipsis tae trail off intae silence—for example: "But I thocht he wis . . ." When placed at the beginnin or end o a sentence, the ellipsis can an aa inspire a feelin o melancholy or langin.
