William Ganz (* 7. január 1919, Košice – † 10. november 2009, Los Angeles)[1] bol americký kardiológ slovenského pôvodu, ktorý spoločne s Jeremy Swanom v roku 1970 vymyslel katéter pľúcnej artérie, často označovaný ako Swan-Ganzov katéter.[2][3][4] Katéter sa používa na monitorovanie srdcových podmienok, najmä na jednotkách intenzívnej starostlivosti. Ganz bol tiež jedným z prvých kardiológov, ktorí používali enzýmy na otvorenie upchatých tepien, ktoré môžu viesť k infarktom.[2][5][4]

Životopis

Ganz sa narodil v Košiciach v roku 1919.[2][4][6] V roku 1938 sa zapísal na Karlovu univerzitu v Prahe.[2][7] Škola bola dočasne zatvorená v roku 1940 po začiatku okupácie Česko-Slovenska Nacistickým Nemeckom. Ganz, ktorý bol žid, bol počas druhej svetovej vojny poslaný do nacistického pracovného tábora v Maďarsku.[2][4] V roku 1944 bolo naplánované jeho odvedenie do tábora Auschwitz-Birkenau, podarilo sa mu ale utiecť a ukrýval sa.[2] Po druhej svetovej vojne absolvoval Ganz Karlovu univerzitu v roku 1947 a stal najlepším absolventom svojej triedy.[2][7]

Ganz pracoval v Česko-Slovensku, ktoré bola v tom čase pod komunistickou vládou. V roku 1966 mal Ganz dovolené vziať si svoju manželku Magdu a ich dvoch synov na dovolenku do Talianska.[2] Namiesto toho odišla rodina do Rakúska do Viedne, kde požiadali o vízum do Spojených štátov.[2] V Los Angeles mal príbuzných, čo umožnilo jeho rodine rýchle presťahovanie do Spojených štátov.[2] Ganz získal pozíciu v nemocnici Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, kde pôsobil po zvyšok svojej kariéry.[2][4] Pôsobil aj ako profesor medicíny na Kalifornskej univerzite v Los Angeles.[8][4]

Ganz a doktor Jeremy Swan prvýkrát vyvinuli myšlienku katétra pľúcnej artérie v roku 1970.[2] Balón sa umiestni na koniec flexibilného katétra, ktorý sa následne vkladá do pľúcnej artérie. Okrem toho zohrával Ganz úlohu pri vývoji trombolýzy, v ktorej enzýmy rozkladajú krvné zrazeniny.[2][5]

Ganz zomrel na prirodzene dňa 11. novembra 2009, vo veku 90 rokov.[2] Prežili ho jeho synovia, Dr. Peter Ganz, kardiológ na Californskej univerzite v San Francisco, a Dr. Tomas Ganz, pulmonológ v UCLA.[2] Jeho manželka Magda Ganzová zomrela v roku 2005.[2]
