Desmid merupakan alga hijau yang paling indah dan menarik untuk dipelajari. Desmid hidup bebas terpung, dapat soliter dan berkoloni.

Desmid merupakan salah satu jenis fitoplankton untuk beberapa genera seperti, Closterium, Cosmarium, dan Staurastrum.[1] Desmid hidup di air danau atau air kolam yang tenang. Mereka juga dapat ditemukan di rawa-rawa serta sungai air tawar oligotrofik maupun mesotrofik.[2] Desmid terdiri atas sel yang terbagi dua bagian yang sama. Nukleusnya terletak di tengah dan mengandung satu atau dua buah kloroplas. Desmid tidak memiliki alat gerak dan sering disebut pula plankton.
