Derek dan galangan kapal milik Hyundai Heavy Industries

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (atau HHI) adalah produsen kapal terbesar di dunia.[5][6] Perusahaan ini berkantor pusat di Ulsan, Korea Selatan. HHI didirikan pada tahun 1972 oleh Chung Ju-yung sebagai sebuah divisi dari Hyundai Group, dan pada tahun 1974, berhasil menyelesaikan pembuatan kapal pertamanya.[7] Pada tahun 2002, perusahaan ini resmi dipisah dari Hyundai Group.[8] HHI memiliki empat divisi bisnis utama, yakni Pembuatan Kapal, Lepas Pantai & Rekayasa, Fasilitas Industri & Rekayasa, serta Motor & Mesin. HHI juga memiliki lima anak usaha pendukung, yakni Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems, Hyundai Construction Equipment, Hyundai Robotics, Hyundai Heavy Industries Green Energy, dan Hyundai Global Service.[9]

Hyundai Group memulai sejarahnya sebagai sebuah perusahaan konstruksi pada tahun 1947, dan dipimpin oleh pendirinya, Chung Ju-Yung.[10] Perusahaan yang berhubungan erat dengan Hyundai Group, Hyundai Motor Company didirikan pada tahun 1967, lima tahun sebelum pendirian perusahaan tersebut. Hyundai Motor juga didirikan oleh Chung.

Nama perusahaan ini merupakan romanisasi informal dari sebuah kata di Bahasa Korea, yakni bahasa Korea: 현대 (hyeondae) yang berarti "kontemporer". Nama ini dipilih karena mencerminkan visi Chung terhadap perusahaan.
