Laterit

Laterit atau tanah merah adalah jenis tanah tidak subur yang tadinya subur dan kaya akan unsur hara, tetapi unsur hara tersebut hilang karena larut dibawa oleh air hujan yang tinggi. Laterit merupakan tanah yang kaya akan aluminium oksida dan telah mengalami pelapukan yang lanjut. Tanah mineral ini miskin akan mineral-mineral dan mudah lapuk serta kandungan mineral resisten sangat tinggi. Penyebaran tanah ini di Indonesia diperkirakan 8.085 juta ha yang tersebar di Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, dan Jawa. Karena tanah ini merupakan tanah mineral yang kaya akan seskuioksida, maka tanah ini mempunyai muatan positif dan didominasi oleh liat aktivasi rendah.
