Alvikit ist ein mittel- bis feinkörniges magmatisches Gestein, das zu den Karbonatiten gerechnet wird. Zusammen mit seinem grobkörnigen Äquivalent Sövit bildet es die Gesteinsgruppe der Calcitkarbonatite.
Etymologie
Alvkit wurde nach seiner Typlokalität, der Ortschaft Alvik auf der schwedischen Insel Alnön (Västernorrland), benannt.
Erstbeschreibung
Alvikit wurde zum ersten Mal im Jahre 1942 von H. von Eckermann wissenschaftlich beschrieben.[1]
Mineralogie
Hauptmineral von Alvikit ist definitionsgemäß Calcit, das mit mehr als 50 Volumenprozent vertreten ist. Nebengemengteile sind Ankerit, Apatit, Klinopyroxen (Aegirin-Augit), Magnetit und Quarz, akzessorisch treten auch Fluorit und Sulfidminerale (wie Pyrit, Chalkopyrit und Galenit) hinzu, gelegentlich auch Allanit, Biotit, Chlorit, Granat (titanreich), Monazit, Phlogopit, Pyrochlor, Titanit und Wollastonit. Postmagmatisch erscheinen Apatit, Baryt, Dolomit, Orthoklas, Parisit, Rhodochrosit, Strontianit und Synchysit.

Geochemie
Alvikite unterscheiden sich von Söviten nicht nur in der Korngröße, sondern auch geochemisch. So besitzen sie im Vergleich zu Söviten generell einen höheren Gehalt an Seltenen Erden, zeigen aber bei Strontium eine Abreicherung.
Lagerstätten
Mit Alvikiten sind Lagerstätten für Seltene Erden assoziiert, aber auch für Fluorit wie beispielsweise Amba Dongar in Indien und für Phlogopit (Barra in Indien).
