Bullshit Detector est une série de compilations réalisées par le groupe anarcho-punk (et collectif artistique) Crass et publiées sur leur label Crass Records. Trois éditions sortent entre 1980 et 1984, composées de maquettes, d'enregistrements bruts et d'illustrations qui avaient été envoyées au groupe. La qualité sonore de la série Bullshit Detector est inégale, et souvent très basique ou médiocre, car Crass masterise directement les bandes pour l'enregistrement sans aucune production ni amélioration supplémentaire.

Historique

Crass tient à mettre en valeur l'ensemble des groupes qui postulent, en sélectionnant un titre de chaque démo envoyée[1]. Il existe une grande diversité d'esthétiques musicales : punk rock, spoken word, rock expérimental, synth-pop, rock industriel...[1]. La qualité sonore de la série Bullshit Detector est inégale, et souvent très basique ou médiocre car Crass masterise directement les bandes pour l'enregistrement sans aucune production ni amélioration supplémentaire[1]. Pour Crass, l'attente d'une performance impeccable allait à l'encontre de l'essence même de l'éthique punk DIY :

« N'attendez pas de musique quand la mélodie est colère, quand le message chante la rébellion, quand trois accords sont frustration, quand les mots viennent du cœur. »

Le titre Bullshit Detector est une référence à la chanson "Garageland" des Clash, de leur premier album The Clash, et de cet extrait : « Back in the garage with my Bullshit Detector »[2]. La chanson est d'ailleurs reprise par le guitariste de Chumbawamba, Boffo, sur le deuxième volume.

Cette série voit l'apparition sur vinyle de Chumbawamba (sur le deuxième volume) et de Napalm Death (sur le troisième). La pochette de POWER, ornée d'illustrations au marqueur, est conçue par Haggis, alias David Hargreaves, chanteur principal de Youthanasia PX.

Un quatrième Bullshit Detector, non officiel, est une compilation internationale, publiée par le label suisse indépendant anarcho-punk Resistance Productions en 1994. Il y a également eu des disques publiés dans un style similaire et avec un sentiment similaire, comme la compilation « Bullsheep Detector » de groupes punk gallois sortie en 2012[3].
