Gústaf 5. (Oscar Gustaf Adolf, fæddur 16. júní 1858, dáinn 29. október 1950) var konungur Svíþjóðar frá 8. desember 1907 til dauðadags. Hann var af Bernadotte-ætt, sonur Óskars 2. Svíakonungs og Soffíu af Nassau. Hann var 92 ára þegar hann lést og er sá konungur Svíþjóðar sem langlífastur hefur orðið og ríkti þriðja lengst, á eftir Magnúsi Eiríkssyni smek og sonarsonarsyni sínum, Karli 16. Gústaf.

Faðir hans tók við ríkjum árið 1872 og varð Gústaf þá krónprins Svíþjóðar og Noregs en Noregur fékk sjálfstæði tveimur árum áður en hann tók við krúnunni og varð hann því aldrei Noregskonungur. Hann var íhaldssamur í skoðunum og vildi halda fast í völd krúnunnar. Árið 1914 þvingaði hann ríkisstjórn Frjálslynda flokksins til að segja af sér og skipaði sjálfur menn í utanþingsstjórn en eftir kosningarnar 1917 neyddist hann til að fela formanni Frjálslynda flokksins stjórnarmyndun og láta af tilraunum til að hafa áhrif á stjórnun ríkisins. Hann var talinn hallur undir nasista og Þýskaland á fjórða áratugnum en reyndi að fá Hitler til að draga úr Gyðingaofsóknum.

Fjölskylda

Gústaf giftist þann 20. september 1881 Viktoríu prinsessu af Baden, dóttur Friðriks 1. stórhertoga. Hún var afkomandi Gústafs 4. Adólfs Svíakonungs og með hjónabandi þeirra sameinuðust gamla Vasaættin og hin nýja konungsætt, Bernadotte. Hjónaband þeirra mun ekki hafa verið sérlega hamingjusamt, enda er Gústaf talinn hafa verið sam- eða tvíkynhneigður. Þau eignuðust þó þrjá syni:

  • Gústaf 6. Adólf (1882-1973).
  • Vilhelm prins, hertogi af Södermanland (1884-1965).
  • Eiríkur prins (1889-1918). Hann var flogaveikur og lítillega þroskaskertur.
