の報告では「(いくつかの癌で結果が得られたが)再検証が必要である。」と結論付けている[221]。
高用量の抗酸化物質を含む栄養補助食品の試験の一つ、"Supplémentation en Vitamines et Mineraux Antioxydants" (SU.VI.MAX) study は、いわゆる健康食に相当する栄養を補足し、その効果を調査する試験である[219]。この試験では、12,500人のフランス人の男女を対象に、低用量の抗酸化物質(アスコルビン酸:120 mg、ビタミンE:30 mg、β-カロテン:6 mg、セレン:100 μg、亜鉛:20mg)または偽薬を平均7.5年間摂取させた。結果、癌および心臓疾患に対し統計学的に見て抗酸化物質には大きな効果は認められなかった。事後分析では男性では31%の癌リスクの減少が見られたが、女性では見られなかった。これは、試験を開始した段階での血液検査の結果から試験開始当初の時点で女性被験者の方が男性被験者よりもビタミンE や β-カロテンの血中濃度が高かったことが判明しており、男性と女性で状態が初めから異なっていたためである[237]。
