Familia takatifu katika Ukristo ni hasa ile iliyoundwa na Mtoto Yesu, Bikira Maria na mtakatifu Yosefu.

Kwa imani ya Wakristo ni kwamba Mungu alipomtuma Mwanae pekee kujifanya mtu hakutaka azaliwe nje ya familia, kwa kuwa hiyo ndiyo mpango wake asili kwa ajili ya watu tangu alipoumba Adamu na Eva akawabariki wazaliane.

Heshima kwa Familia takatifu katika Kanisa Katoliki ilianzishwa rasmi na Fransisko wa Laval, askofu wa kwanza wa New France (Kanada) katika karne ya 17.

Katika Injili

Injili ya Mathayo na ile ya Luka zina habari kadhaa kuhusu maisha ya familia hiyo [1] iliyoanza kwa kufuata taratibu za Wayahudi: mwanamume alitoa mapema posa na mahari, hata hivyo hakuanza kuishi na mke wake hadi baada ya mwaka mmoja.

Ni wakati huo wa katikati kwamba, kadiri ya Injili, Maria alipata mimba kwa uwezo wa Roho Mtakatifu. Baada ya Yosefu kujulishwa, ndipo alipomchukua nyumbani asifanye naye tendo la ndoa walau hadi alipomzaa mtoto Yesu.

Baada ya Yesu Kristo kuzaliwa Bethlehemu, Injili hizo zinasimulia matukio ya kutahiriwa kwake siku nane baadaye, kutolewa hekaluni siku arubaini baadaye, kukimbilia Misri, kurudi Nazareti na hija ya pamoja kwenda Yerusalemu[2]. Katika hayo yote Yosefu, Maria na Yesu wako pamoja.

Baada ya tukio hilo la mwisho, ambapo mtoto alikuwa na umri wa miaka 12, Yosefu hatokei tena katika Injili, hivi kwamba wengi wanafikiri alifariki kabla Yesu hajaanza utume wake.

Katika liturujia

Sikukuu ya Familia takatifu inaadhimishwa na Kanisa la Kilatini mwishoni mwa kila mwaka, kati ya Noeli (25 Desemba) na sherehe ya Mama wa Mungu (1 Januari). Lengo ni kufanya familia hiyo iwe kielelezo cha nyingine zote ziishi kitakatifu[2].

Ilipoanzishwa na Papa Leo XIII mwaka 1893 ilipangwa baada ya Epifania (6 Januari), lakini baadaye ilihamishwa.
