Sarmal galaksi

Sarmal galaksi ya da sarmal gökada, orijinal olarak Edwin Hubble tarafından 1936 tarihli çalışması The Realm of the Nebulae'da tanımlanan bir galaksi sınıfını oluşturur.[1] Hubble düzeni'ne göre bir galaksi sınıfıdır ve özellikleri şöyle özetlenebilir:

  • Etrafı teker adlı yıldızlar topluluğu tarafından sarılı olan bir merkezî karın veya topağı olur.
  • Nispî olarak yüksek seviyede açısal hızı vardır.

Sarmal galaksiler, adlarını yıldızların oluştuğu parlak kollarına borçuludurlar. Bu kollar yaklaşık logaritmik olarak merkezden dışa doğru açılırlar. Sarmal galaksiler, kendi içlerinde çubuklu ve çubuksuz sarmal galaksilere ayrılırlar.

Samanyolu, yani Dünya'nın yerel yıldızı olan Güneş'in ait olduğu galaksi de bu türdendir. Spitzer Uzay Teleskobu'ndan elde edilen son verilere göre muhtemelen SBb sınıfından olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

Düzensiz galaksilerle birlikte, sarmal galaksiler Evren'deki galaksilerin yaklaşık % 60'ını oluşturur.[2] Çoğunlukla düşük yoğunluklu bölgelerde bulunurlar ve galaksi kümelerinin merkezlerinde nadirdirler.[3]
