Les Vortas sont, dans l'univers de fiction de Star Trek, une espèce extraterrestre originaire du Quadrant Gamma. Ils sont un protagoniste de l'affrontement qui oppose le Dominion à la Fédération des planètes unies et ses alliés Klingons et Romuliens, raconté dans la série télévisée Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Physiologie

Les Vortas sont des humanoïdes modifiés génétiquement par les Changeants. À l'origine, ils n'étaient qu'une race de petits primates. Quand un Vorta meurt, il est immédiatement remplacé par son clone. Il semble qu'il existe très peu de Vortas différents. Weyoun est celui qui revient le plus souvent.

Utilisés comme diplomates, les Vortas ont une excellente ouïe pour entendre les apartés.

Culture

Les Vortas sont dévoués corps et âmes à leurs maîtres du Dominion. Si l'un d'eux émet des doutes, il est tué et remplacé par son clone. Les Vortas n'ont pas de vie sociale, ni familiale. Tout ce qu'ils font ne sert que les intérêts des Fondateurs.

Ils contrôlent les Jem'hadars par l'intermédiaire de la kétracel blanche, drogue nécessaire à la survie de ces soldats. Les deux peuples se détestent mais sont unis dans leur dévotion envers les Fondateurs.

Les Vortas sont la seule race qui n'est pas soumise par la force au Dominion. En effet, il y a 10 000 ans, juste avant la création du Dominion, une famille de Vortas primitifs sauva la vie à un fondateur poursuivis par trois "solides" (désignation pour les races non-métamorphes), qui le chassaient par peur de ses pouvoirs métamorphes. Les fondateurs n'ont pas oublié ce geste, unique de la part de non-métamorphes, alors ils les aidèrent à évoluer et à tenir un rôle important de leur futur empire, tel qu'administrateur civil et militaire. Durant 10 000 ans, les autres races crurent que les Vortas étaient les fondateurs, jusqu'à ce que la vérité soit dévoilée par Sisko et Odo de Deep Space Nine.
