Z Chamaeleontis (abrégé Z Cha) est une étoile variable de type nova naine situé à environ ∼ 394 a.l. (∼ 121 pc)[2] du Soleil, où deux étoiles orbitent l'une autour de l'autre toutes les 1,78 heures. Le système comprend une naine blanche à éclipses et une naine rouge et peut-être un troisième compagnon substellaire de faible masse encore non confirmé[8].

Z Chamaeleontis a été découverte en 1904, lors des travaux nécessaires à la production du Catalogue Astrographique. Dès 1905, une période de variabilité avait été déterminée[9]. En 1969, George S. Mumford a découvert qu'en plus d'être une nova naine, l'étoile est une variable à éclipses[10].

Dai et al. (2009) invoquent la présence d'un troisième objet pour expliquer les variations de la période orbitale, dont la périodicité apparente est d'environ 28 ans. Ce troisième corps pourrait avoir une masse minimale 20 fois supérieure à celle de Jupiter et se situer à 9,9 unités astronomiques de la nova naine. Il s'agirait probablement d'une naine brune de faible masse.
