Sergius I was die 84ste pous van die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk.

Biografie

Pous Sergius I is van Siriese afkoms gebore in Palermo, Sisilië, of in Antiogië, Sirië. Sy pa was Tiberius. Op 15 Desember 687 volg hy Pous Konon op na slim intriges teen Teenpous Paschalis en Teenpous Theodorus en regeer tot sy dood op 8 September 701. Hy word opgevolg deur Pous Johannes VI. Die naam ‘Sergius’ beteken 'Dienskneg'.

Pontifikaat

Die eksarg van Ravenna is deur Paschalis omgekoop om hom as teenpous aan te stel. Paschalis het egter nie betaal nie en die goewerneur het toe Pous Sergius I erken en die geld van hom afgepers. Ook Theodorus is as teenpous aangestel, maar hy het nie lank gehou nie.

Sergius het in konflik gekom met keiser Justinianus II van Bisantium toe die keiser die konsilie van Trullië opgeroep het. Sergius het al die besluite van die konsilie verwerp, waaronder wysiginge aan die selibaat. Die keiser wou Sergius verban, maar dit het nie gewerk nie.

Op 10 April 689 doop hy koning Caedwalla van Wessex in Rome. Hy steun ook Sint Aldhelm, ab van Malmesbury.

Sergius het die Agnus Dei in die mis ingevoer en nuwe feeste ingestel waaronder Mariaboodskap, Mariageboorte, Mariahemelvaart en Marialigmis.

Hy het goeie betrekkinge met die Franke onderhou en Willibrordus, die apostel van die Friese, tot biskop gewy. Hy het ook Berhtwald as aartsbiskop van Kantelberg aangestel.

Verering

Pous Sergius word as heilige in die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk vereer. Sy feesdag is op 8 September.
