Urbanus I was die sewentiende pous van die Rooms-Katolieke Kerk.

Biografie

Pous Urbanus I is gebore in Rome en oorlede op 23 Mei 230. In 222, die jaar waarin keiser Elagabalus deur 'n sluipmoordenaar vermoor is, volg hy Pous Callixtus I op en word na sy dood opgevolg deur Pous Pontianus.

Daar is nie veel oor sy lewe bekend nie. Hy word tradisioneel verbind met die heilige Cecilia, die beskermheilige van musiek. Eusebius noem hom in sy kerkgeskiedenis. Die naam Urbanus beteken “beskaafde”.

Pontifikaat

Pous Urbanus I se pontifikaat word gekenmerk deur spanninge met die Romeinse keiser Alexander Severus wat bekend is vir sy Christenvervolgings. Teenpous Hippolitus was ook nog steeds bedrywig in Rome. Die man van Cecilia, Valerianus, en sy broer Tibertus is deur hom bekeer. Urbanus se pontifikaat is die eerste een waarvan die datums definitief vasgestel is.

Hy het die volgende dekreet uitgevaardig met betrekking tot kollektegeld:

Die gawes van die gelowiges aan die Here mag slegs vir kerklike doeleindes en die algemene goed van die Christelike gemeenskap gebruik word, want hulle is die geseënde gawes van die gelowiges, die boetedoenings van die sondaars en die erfdeel van die armes.

Verering

Urbanus I word as martelaar en heilige vereer.

Daar word beweer dat Urbanus die beeld van 'n afgod laat omval het deur gebed. Hy is daarna geslaan en gemartel voordat hy ter dood veroordeel is deur onthoofding.

Tydens die Middeleeue neem sy verering sulke ekstreme vorms aan dat die outoriteite dit aan bande probeer lê het. Met name in Duitstalige lande en die Elsas word hy vereer as die beskermheilige van die wynboere, wingerde, wyn, die winter en kuipers. Hy word aangeroep teen dronkenskap, jig, ryp, onweer en weerlig. Hy is ook die beskermheilige van Maastricht, Toledo, Troyes en Valencia.

Sy feesdag is op 25 Mei. Hy word vaak voorgestel met wyn en druiwe, 'n gevalle afgod langs 'n gebreekte suil, 'n gesel, 'n staak en sy afgekapte kop.

Kuns

Urbanus word in verskeie kunswerke voorgestel, meestal sittende met die tiara, die pouslike mantel en 'n swaard wat na die grond wys. Verder word hy ook voorgestel met pouslike mantel, 'n myter, 'n bybel en 'n tros druiwe.
